How to Choose the Best Rug Pad

Finding the right rug pad can be a challenge but we're here to make sure you find the perfect rug pad for any type of rug you have from an area rug to an outdoor rug.

Why You Need a Rug Pad

If you've made it this far, you probably have an idea of why rug pads are so important for your rug and flooring and we've included a brief explanation here. Rug padding will help prolong the life of your rug and help protect your flooring. The right rug pad will also add cushioning for extra comfort and can help get your rug from slipping or bunching up.

If you want to know more about all the benefits of a premium rug pad, you can read our page explaining why rug pads are so important.

The Best Rug Pad by Floor Type

Flooring is expensive and you don't want your rug or rug pad to damage it. Whether you have hardwood floors, laminate floors, or other types of hard floors, we'll help you find a rug pad that will keep both your floors and rugs safe.

Rug Pads for Hardwood Floors

Hardwood flooring is beautiful, but sometimes you just want some extra cushion or color to add something more to the room. That doesn't mean you should have to sacrifice your nice wood floors though. Check out the rug pads we recommend for hardwood floors.

Rug Pads for Carpet

You might wonder if it's weird to have a rug on top of carpet, but there are some great ways to make it look fantastic. The biggest issue with rugs on carpet you'll need to think about is the rug bunching up or wrinkling. For this, we recommend our carpet lock rug pad.

Rug Pads for Laminate

Hard laminate flooring is an excellent choice to have a beautiful floor on a budget, but it's all for nothing if your rug or rug pad damages the floors. To avoid this, check out our recommendations to keep your laminate protected.

Rug Pads for Tile Floors

With uneven tile floors, rug pad thickness is especially important to make up for the uneven tile. We recommend getting a thick rug pad to keep your rug from wearing down unevenly. View the rugs we recommend for tile here.

Rug Pads for Other Floor Types

Still not sure which rug pad will be best for your floor? Check out our recommendations for some of the less common floor types or get in contact to chat with an expert.

The Best Rug Pad by Rug Type

Sometimes the type of rug or rug size will determine the type of rug pad that will be best for you. Whether you have a flatweave rug, area rug, needlepoint rug, runner rug, or any other type, we're here to help.

Rug Pads for Area Rugs

If you have an area rug, you want to be sure to get the right area rug pad for it. With area rugs, you often won't have to be as concerned with it slipping or bunching up because you can anchor it with furniture. However, it's good to think about a rug pad to protect floors and your rug from that heavy furniture as well as getting extra cushioning so it's extra comfy. For more information, check out our guide on choosing the right rug pad for your area rug.

We custom cut all our rug pads to match your rug size and shape perfectly, but some of the most common rug pad sizes we get are pads for a 9x12 rug and an 8x10 rug.

Rug Pads for Runner Rugs

A runner rug or small rug for an entryway or high traffic area has unique needs because it is more prone to slippage. To avoid this, we recommend choosing a low-profile rug pad with grip like our RugPro, Nature's Grip, or Super Lock Natural.

Rug Pads for Outdoor Rugs

An outdoor rug has specific needs because it has to be able to stand up to outdoor conditions. For a good outdoor rug pad, we recommend Super Lock Outdoor rug pad because it can withstand the harsher outdoor conditions and has good airflow to prevent mold and mildew.

The Best Rug Pad by Material

There are a variety of different materials to choose from when it comes to rug pads and we want to make sure you get the right one for you and your floors.

Natural Rubber

Natural rubber sheet rug pads are great for preventing slippage while still protecting your floors and being non-toxic. Check out our blog post to learn more about the benefits of a rubber rug pad.

Whether you want a 100% felt rug pad or a pad with felt and rubber, we have a variety of different premium rug pads to choose from. Our Eco-Plush felted rug pad is a great option because we use 100% recycled synthetic fibers from new unused carpet fibers and yarn. For more information about felt rug pads, check out our blog post on felt fabric.

Our premium PVC rug pads use a high-performance soybean oil polymer blend for superior gripping power and long-lasting support. PVC rug pads are also good as a high grip rug pad. For a great PVC rug pad, we recommend the Anchor Grip. To learn more, check out our blog post about PVC as a material in rug pads.

Memory Foam

Memory foam rug pads are for rugs where you want supreme comfort. These pads use the same 100% Visco elastic memory foam that you would find in a memory foam topper or memory foam mattress. To learn more about this material, check out our blog post about maximizing the comfort of your home with a memory foam rug pad.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • What size rug pad do I need for my rug?

Simply enter your rug’s exact dimensions and we will cut your pad 1” to 1.5’’ shorter than your rug’s size. With thicker rug pads, we take 1.5’’ off on all sides and with lower profile pads we take 1’’ off on all sides, enough to keep the pad hidden from view.

  • Where are your products made?

We manufacture our rug pads domestically in Georgia and cut them at our warehouse in Connecticut. American manufacturing gives us better control over the quality of our rug pads while keeping jobs in the United States.

  • How long does it take for my rug pad to arrive?

If your order is placed before 2pm EST, we will custom cut and ship out your rug pad that same day. For all orders placed after 2pm EST, your package will ship out the following day. Check out our shipping options for an estimate on how long it will take for your delivery to get to your home. Expedited shipping is available for an additional fee. All shipping estimates are based on the date of shipment, not the date of order, and only include business days.

  • Do you custom cut your rug pads?

Yes, we professionally custom cut our rug pads to fit any rug dimension. All of our rug pads are cut directly from the roll by a trained staff member. Before adding a product to your cart, all you need to do is enter your rug's size and shape. We will take between 1-1.5’’ off all sides, depending on how thick the pad is. All of this will be detailed for you after you fill out the product form. If you have a more complex request, you’re free to offer alternative cutting instructions ("special instructions") as well.

  • Are your rug pads safe for my floors?

Yes, our rug pads are safe for all indoor flooring surfaces as long as you follow your flooring manufacturers instructions and proper curing times are met. If you are refinishing floors, it’s best to wait at least 30 days before using a rug pad.
