9 x 12 Rug Pads
For 9x12 rugs, in general, we suggest rug pads with more cushion than grip. Such large rugs are often anchored down by their own weight or by surrounding furniture, so they don’t generally need a non-slip pad.
Because 9x12 rugs are most often placed in rooms like living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and dens, where you and your family spend the most time and where comfort and cushion are most desired, cushioned rug pads can be the best option.
Solid design, cushioned pads also protect floors from wear, dirt, scratches and stains while protecting rugs from tears and indentations caused by heavy furniture and offering a bit of soundproofing and insulation.
There are a variety of options available according to how much cushion and lift you’d like. Among the best choices for 9x12 rugs, Eco-Plush pads are woven of 100% recycled felt made from new unused carpet fibers and yarn, heat-pressed to last longer and feel softer than outdated jute rug pads that can wear easily and cause unpleasant odors; unlike synthetic pads, eco-friendly Eco Plush pads are 100% safe on all floors; they contain no glues, bonding agents, or adhesives that can outgas and ruin floors. Eco Push pads are available in 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4" thicknesses, depending on how much cushion you and lift you want.
For the ultimate in luxurious cushioning under 9x12 rugs, Cloud Comfort pads are made from the same high-quality visco-elastic memory foam found in premium mattresses. Made with natural minerals and soybean oils vs. petro oils for a very low VOC content, Cloud Comfort pads are 100% safe and eco-friendly. Their proprietary moisture barrier protects floors by blocking spills while allowing vapor to escape. It offers the highest levels of sound absorption, comfort and insulation available in a rug pad and is available in 1/4 and 7/16" thicknesses.
One exception to the general rule with 9x12s: for thin and fine rugs, such as flatweaves that tend to wrinkle and buckle, you may want to consider rug pads made with a combination of rubber for grip and felt for cushion, like Superior-Lock, thick cushioned felt with a reinforced rubber backing, available in 1/4" and 7/16" and Contour Lock, a 1/8" thick felt and rubber rug pad that offers a strong grip and moderate levels of cushioning without bulking. Contour Lock protects floors from scratching and rug backings, so it’s particularly well-suited to flat-woven 8x11 rugs such as Kilims, Dhurries, and Soumaks. These pads offer the comfort of cushioned pads but keep thinner rugs laying smooth and flat. And because they’re made from natural rubber, they won’t ever stick to, mark, or stain floors finishes.
Customer Questions & Answers
I have a 9' x 12' rug with a 1" pile and am thinking of getting the Superior Lock pad. Which thickness is best for this size rug?
I believe the 1/3" thickness will be fine for you.
I will be ordering a 9' x 12' rug for my family room. Do you recommend a non-slip pad or are the size and the weight of the rug enough? I have two very active kids who will even do cartwheels inside the house and obviously I don't want them to get hurt.
Yes, I recommend using a non-slip pad with exceptional grip for your rug and family room. Take a look at our Contour Lock or Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pads. Either of these will work well for you to prevent your rug from slipping and moving while also providing good levels of cushioning.
What is the best pad for a 9 feet x 12 feet hooked rug on a tile floor?
If your rug is to be anchored by furniture I would recommend the Eco Plush all felt pad. If there is no furniture then choose Superior Lock, a felt and natural rubber pad with a powerful grip and generous cushioning.
I have a 9' x 12' sisal area rug with a rubber backing that sits under a dining room table. What do you recommend for this?
Take a look at one of our versatile dual purpose pads. They provide cushioning as well as gripping, which will keep the rug in place when chairs are being moved in and out. I suggest our Superior Lock or Contour Lock pads, and the most suitable one for you depends on the comfort level you are after.
What pad do you recommend for a 9' x 12' nice quality silk area rug? Is a rubber pad enough? Also, I've heard that I would need a pad with a non-slip side and a felt side. Please help.
Our Contour Lock 1/8" pad will work brilliantly for you. It has a felt top and a natural rubber backing to stop slipping. This pad will not skid, stain or mark your floor.
Will the Eco Plush pad be OK under a 9x12 rug that's under a king size bed and bedside tables? I want to be sure that parts of the rug that aren't directly under the bed won't slip.
The Eco Plush pad will work great for that rug under the bed. The exposed parts of the rug will not slip.
What pad do you recommend for a 9' x 12' jute rug on a hardwood floor? We don't have children or dogs. Thanks.
I recommend the Superior Lock 1/4" thick pad if you don't have furniture on your rug. Its gripping prowess will stop your rug from slipping, sliding, and bunching. If you do have furniture to anchor it down, I recommend the lush cushioning of our Eco Plush pad, also at 1/4" thickness.
My new house has a laminate floor and I want to know which pad is best to put under a 9' x 12' oriental rug. Amazon comments indicate that wet pads can damage floors and I've had to clean up after my new puppy's accidents.
The Anchor Grip pad is great for your situation. It has a powerful grip and is waterproof, so it won't damage your floor, no matter how much mess your puppy makes.
What kind of pad should I get for a 9' by 12' woven wool carpet on a marble floor?
I recommend the Eco Plush 3/8" pad for your rug and carpet. This 100% heat-pressed felt pad will provide long-term floor and rug protection as well as help soundproof and insulate the room in which it is placed.
I am ordering a rug pad for a 9' x 12' rug on an older hardwood floor. I'm wondering if Superior Lock will be okay for it. My main goal is for people to feel comfortable sitting on the floor, so the pad must be soft.
Superior Lock would be perfect for you. It has a dense felt core that beautifully softens the feel of rugs. I recommend the 7/16" thickness.
I have a flatweave dhurrie area rug 9x12 for my living room and am debating between contour lock and 1/4" superior lock. Any Advice?
We suggest the 1/4 inch Superior Lock for adding more comfort to your rug However, if you just want protect and keep the rug in place, we suggest the Contour Lock.
I have a 9' by 12' thick Chinese rug on my new plush carpet. Which of your pads will ensure the rug stays flat?
Carpet Lock is the only pad we would suggest for wall-to-wall carpet. Nothing else will work in our experience. This is a 7/16" thick felt and natural rubber pad that fixes itself tightly to carpet fibers to keep rugs flat and stable.
I have a 9'x 12' rug and want to know if it will slip if I use the Eco Plush pad. There will be a table and some living room chairs on top of the rug. I purchased Superior Lock, and it does a good job of holding the rug down, but it is not very plush.
If you are going to have furniture anchoring down your rug then Eco Plush will be okay. I would recommend the 1/4" thickness because you wouldn't want it to be too elevated. You could also consider Superior Lock 7/16" thickness. This would definitely give your rug a plusher feel.
We are going to order two pads but won't be using them until our floors are refinished. So storage is a concern. How are the pads shipped? Our rugs are approximately 9 x 12 feet and we need them to be rolled.
We ship via UPS and the pads will be folded and rolled. Due to shipping constraints, we would not be able to send a 9' x 12' pad at full width.
I’m looking for a pad for a 9' x 12' sisal rug that will be under my dining table. Which pad do you recommend?
I recommend the cushioned comfort and long-term protection of the Eco Plush pad, either the 1/4" or 3/8" thickness. This pad is ideal for larger rugs that don't require non-slip properties.
Which rug pad and thickness would you recommend for our 9 feet x 12 feet Soumak rug?
My recommendation would be our Superior Lock felt and natural rubber pad which is 1/4" thick. That thickness will provide an ample level of cushioning while protecting your floor and keeping the rug in place. If adding comfort is not a priority, you can go with Contour Lock which is 1/8" thick. It's essentially the same pad but thinner so it won't provide as much cushioning but it will keep your rug stable and protect your floor as well.
