7 x 10 Rug Pads
What type of rug pad you’ll need for your 7x10 rug will depend a bit on its weight and thickness as well as where you’re placing it. For most 7x10 rugs, you’ll likely want some balance of grip and cushion. Look for pads that combine felt cushioning with natural rubber, the strongest gripping, longest lasting, safest and most eco-friendly material for keeping rugs lying flat and in place.
For thinner, lighter-weight rugs like flatweaves consider a strong-gripping pad like Rug Pro, a low-profile, high-performance pad that works particularly well in high traffic areas and wherever door clearance may be an issue and/or you’d like your rugs to lie flat and flush with the floor. This pad’s solid design offers more floor coverage than traditional waffle-style non-slip pad, keeping dirt from accumulating and reaching your floors and making vacuuming easier, effectively extending the life of your 7x10 rug by helping to keep it clean.
If you’d like a bit of cushion under your 7x10 rugs but still need to keep a relatively low profile, consider Contour Lock. This 1/8 inch-thick felt and rubber pad offers a strong grip and moderate levels of cushioning without bulking. Rugs often tend to have rough backings, so this pad’s slightly thicker solid design not only helps keeps rugs clean, but fully protects floors from scratches. This pad offers a great overall value for reliable grip and subtle cushioning.
For more cushion, particularly under rugs in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms, there’s Superior Lock, combining the best of both grip and cushion. Made with more felt and a gentle heat-pressing technique, Superior Lock offers unyielding, non-slip traction with thick, cushioned support. It’s essentially a thick layer of felt combined with a thinner non-slip, natural rubber pad. The needle-punched felt surface naturally clings to the bottom of rugs to anchor it to its surface, while offering extra softness and comfort in two thicknesses, 1/4 inch and 7/16 inch, the best choice for maximum comfort under 7x10 rugs.
Customer Questions & Answers
I have a 7 ft x 10 ft handmade oriental carpet to place on a new site finished wood floor. It will be in the foyer. What kind of pad is best for this situation?
Our Superior-Lock pad would work best for you. It doesn't scratch, strip or stain and also offers power gripping. Superior-Lcok comes in 1/4, 1/3, and 7/6 inch thickness. You would need to gauge the thickness of you rug to choose the appropriate thickness of pad to purchase.
I bought a 7'x 10' area rug to go on top of my carpet. Which pad should I buy to keep it in place?
The only pad we really recommend for rugs on top of carpets is our Carpet Lock pad. This eco-friendly pad is made of felt and natural rubber and holds fast to carpet fibers to keep rugs still and in one place when they are being walked on.
What kind of pad should I use under a 7x10 viscose rug on a hardwood floor?
I recommend our dual purpose Contour Lock or Superior Lock pads. Both of these felt and natural rubber pads will keep your rug secure while providing underfoot cushioning. They will also help extend the longevity of your rug.
I am looking for a pad with the strongest grip for a 7' x 10' rug. What can you suggest?
I would take a look at our Contour Lock felt and natural rubber pad. It is a non-slip pad with an excellent grip that keeps rugs stable and secure even in high-traffic areas. And if your rug has a rough backing, it will also protect your floor from scratches.
My new rug will be a 7x10 SmartStrand and will have a heavy coffee table on top of it. I don't think slippage will be an issue, do you? Therefore, will the Eco Plush pad be okay to use?
We usually don't suggest Eco Plush for anything smaller than 8' x 10'. However, since you're putting a coffee table on the rug slipping might not be an issue. If you're really confident that your rug is not going to move then go with this pad at 1/4" thickness. I wouldn't go any higher than that.
I would like a rug pad for a 7x10 100% tufted wool rug. Previously, I bought latex pads from Lowe's that disintegrated into a fine powder. Which pads do you recommend and will they give me the same problems?
For your rug, I would go with a pad that has a powerful grip such as Contour Lock or Superior Lock. Regarding a possible problem with the pads, the short answer is no. We guarantee that Contour Lock pads will last for 15 years and Superior Lock pads for 20 years.
Our office is very open space with high ceilings and hardwood floors. Is there a rug pad to help reduce echo and absorb sounds in our conference rooms? I understand if a rug has a closed back, pads may not matter because sound cannot get through the rug.
I'm going to suggest Superior Lock at 7/16" thickness. This is one of our best pads for sound dampening and it will help to reduce the impact of the echoes in your rooms. When it comes to absorbing sounds the density of the pad is important. The greater the density the harder it is for sound to travel through.
I need a pad for a 7ft x 10ft rug on a hardwood floor under furniture. I don’t think slipping will be an issue, however, I'm not sure about pad thickness. Is Eco Plush 1/4" a good choice? I want comfort but without causing tripping or looking awkward.
Yes, that pad will be fine for you as long as you are certain that the rug is anchored by your furniture. If you are slightly hesitant, you should look at a pad with a gripping attribute.
We had a natural jute woven rug that left marks on our highly polyurethaned Brazil cherry wood floor. Now I need to work out how to clean that floor area. Also, what do you recommend for runners that slip easily on our beautiful floors?
For cleaning, I would use Murphy's oil soap straight from the bottle to remove the marks. For your runners, I suggest our Anchor Grip pad. This is a soybean oil-based polymer blend pad with an excellent grip that will stop your runners moving across the floor.
I have laminate flooring, a 7by10 flat-woven wool rug and a sectional couch and coffee table that will sit on top of it. I need a pad to provide some cushioning underneath and to stop the rug from moving. What do you recommend and what thickness?
Superior Lock is a great pad for your needs, providing cushioning and a strong grip to prevent rippling, bunching and moving. If your rug is on the thin side, I suggest 1/4" pad thickness, otherwise 7/16" will be OK.
I have a 7 x 10 hand knotted rug from Pakistan that is placed over carpet. However, the rug is bunching. Which pad would solve this problem?
We only have one option for rugs on wall-to-wall carpeting and that is Carpet Lock. This is a felt and natural rubber pad that is about 7/16" thick and it excels at keeping rugs lying flat and locked in their place.
I am confused about which is the best rug pad to go under a 7' x 10' rug on my hardwood floors. What do you suggest?
I would suggest Contour Lock or Superior Lock. These are felt and natural rubber pads that provide gripping, cushioning and floor and rug protection. Contour Lock is 1/8" thick while Superior Lock comes in three different thicknesses. They are 1/4", 1/3" and 7/16".
I need to know the perfect pad for a 7' by 10' rug sitting on luxury vinyl flooring. What can you tell me?
I have two suggestions for you. If you need a rug pad with a powerful grip then go for Anchor Grip. This is a soybean oil-based polymer blend pad with excellent non-slip traction. If you don't require a gripping attribute then I recommend Eco Plush, a very comfortable pad that's made of 100% heat-pressed felt.
I bought a 7 by 10 Safavieh rug pad for my hardwood floor. It states it is a synthetic rubber. Is it safe for my floor?
No, it is not. Synthetic rubber will eventually damage your floor.
We recently installed UV oil hardwood floors. Which of your pads is safe to use under a 7 feet x 10 feet rug on this particular floor?
All of our pads are safe to use on hardwood floors. Having said that, we always suggest that customers first contact the manufacturer of their floor for specific guidelines. They will have more knowledge about the flooring they installed and what can and cannot be put down on it.
