12 x 15 Rug Pads
For 12x15 and all oversized rugs, we generally recommend cushioned versus non-slip pads. Most large rugs, especially those with heavier, thicker pile, remain stable on their own and are often held in place by furniture so they don’t require pads with grip. However, some thinner large rugs (like flat weaves) can tend to buckle and wrinkle and may need pads with a combination of cushion and grip.
For large rugs that don’t require any grip, a variety of pads offer great cushion, floor protection, sound-proofing, insulation, and varying levels of lift.
Tightly woven of 100% recycled new, unused carpet fibers and yarn, Eco Plush felt pads are heat-pressed to last longer and feel softer and maintaining their lift and cushion for many years. Backed by a 15-year warranty, Eco Plush pads are safe on flooring, non-toxic, and eco-friendly. They’re also resistant to mold, moisture, mildew and odor-causing bacteria and available in thicknesses of 1/2", 3/8", and 1/4", depending on how much cushion you want.
For the ultimate in luxurious cushion, Cloud Comfort pads are made with the same type of 100% visco-elastic memory foam used in premium mattresses. These pads are specifically engineered to provide comfort for you as well as a supportive layer of protection for larger area rugs that lie flat on their own and do not require non-slip pads and the floors they lie on. They are completely safe for all floors and finishes, including hardwoods and laminates, tile, stone, and marble. Cloud Comfort’s proprietary moisture barrier protects floors by blocking spills while at the same time allowing vapor to escape.
Not only safe for floors, these eco-friendly, toxin-free foam pads are also completely safe for you and your family and good for the planet as well. They’re made with natural minerals and soybean oils instead of petro oils, resulting in very low VOC content. Ideal for environmentally-friendly work or living spaces. This material also offers the highest levels of comfort, sound absorption, and insulation available in a rug pad. Cloud Comfort pads are available in 1/4" and 7/16" thicknesses, depending on how much lift and comfort you desire. A 20-year warranty assures these pads will maintain their lift and cushion and never harm your floors or rugs.
For the very best in floor protection from spill and pet messes as well as comfort and cushion under foot, the SpillTech pad utilizes 3M’s Scotchgard™ technology to create a 100% spill and pet proof rug pad. Designed to maximize cushioning and provide a barrier against stains and spills, SpillTech combines a 3/8’' thick layer of urethane foam with Scotchgard's Advanced Repel Technology, best in class for preventing liquids from reaching your floors.
Note that SpillTech’s thickness and lack of non-slip properties make it a good choice for large rugs that lie flat on their own, but not for thinner rugs prone to buckling of wrinkling. If you have a large flatweave that buckles or wrinkle, consider a moisture-resistant pad with some rubber for grip, like Contour Lock.
Customer Questions & Answers
Which pad is best for a 12ft x 15ft wool area rug on hardwood? SpillTech looks good as we have children, or there’s Eco Plush. I get the impression that SpillTech may not be as good to hardwood floors as Eco Plush. What are your thoughts?
I would go with the Eco Plush. It is safe for all types of floors, provides lots of cushioning and is resistant to moisture. If you decide to purchase the SpillTech pad, bear in mind you will receive it in two equal pieces, because it only comes in 6' rolls.
We have an 12' x 15' shag rug on hardwood flooring. The rug will have couches, end tables, and a coffee table placed on it. I am looking for a pad that will add softness and have seen your memory foam pad. Should I get this and at what thickness?
Two great pads that will give your rug a beautifully soft feel are Eco Plush and the Cloud Comfort pad that you have been looking at. My only concern regarding use of the memory foam pad is that if you go for the thickest option heavy furniture will cause indentation.
I have a 12ft x 15ft Dhurrie rug in my bedroom. I purchased a liner from ABC Carpet but after a few years and not a lot of foot traffic, the rubber padding dried up and is now a powdery-like substance. Do you have a rug pad that will work for me?
Yes, I've two options for you. Both rug pads are durable and will last you for many years to come. The first is Eco Plush which is a 100% all felt pad. This is a non-slip pad, but that won’t be a problem because your rug seems to be large enough that it won’t move and doesn't need to be anchored down by furniture. The second option is Cloud Comfort, a visco-elastic memory foam pad. This is made with the same material that you find in memory foam mattresses. Cloud Comfort is the most comfortable pad in or fleet with Eco Plush running a close second.
I have a 12' x 15' rug and want to know if the actual dimensions of the pad will be the same. Or will they be a tad less to compensate for a little rug overlap onto the floor?
If you give us your exact rug dimensions, we will cut the pad to fit perfectly with our free custom cutting and trimming service.
I'm looking to purchase an Eco Plush pad for a 12feet x 15feet Persian rug on a hardwood floor. I'm not after too much cushioning because the rug is a very thick pile wool, so which pad thickness would you suggest?
As you don't want too much cushioning, 1/4" thickness will be all you need.
What pad do you recommend for an 12' x 15' jute rug on a tile floor?
I would suggest Superior Lock for its strong grip, high comfort levels and how it can increase the lifespan of rugs. This pad comes in three different thicknesses.
I need a pad for a 15x12 rug on a tile floor. I would like something plush but I don't want to trip over it. I am looking at the Eco Plush pad and wonder what thickness you would suggest.
I would say go for the 1/4" or the 3/8". Neither of these should create a tripping hazard.
I have a 12ft x 15ft rug with a slightly scratchy backing on my hardwood floor. What rug pad do you recommend?
The Contour Lock would be a good choice for you. However, if you would like more underfoot comfort, I recommend Superior Lock 1/3" or 7/16". Both of these firm gripping pads are made of felt and natural rubber and will protect your hardwood from being scratched by the rug backing.
What do you suggest for a 12' x 15' sisal rug on a wood floor?
I recommend either Eco Plush or Superior Lock. Both of these pads boast lots of cushioned support that provides floors and rugs with a very high level of protection that preserves their beauty and extends their longevity.
Do I need a pad with grip for a thin 12ft x 15ft rug that has no furniture on it?
Slipping and other types of movement could still be a problem even though this rug is so large. I recommend our Superior Lock pad to keep it in place. This is a high-performing recycled felt and natural rubber pad.
Do you recommend a particular type of pad for an oriental rug on wall-to-wall carpeting? We want to prevent slipping and do not need cushioning. Also, we want to minimize the eventual decomposition of the pad.
We offer only one pad for rugs over wall-to-wall carpeting and that's the Carpet Lock. It only comes in one thickness, which is 7/16" and it prevents slipping, wrinkling and bunching.
What is the best pad to go under a 12' x 15' hand knotted rug that's on a radiant heated wood floor?
I recommend Contour Lock or Superior Lock. These felt and natural rubber pads offer both gripping and cushioning and can easily tolerate the changing temperatures of heated floors. Contour Lock is 1/8" thick while Superior Lock comes in three different thicknesses, the thickest being 7/16".
Do you sell rug pads that will go over plush carpet and under an 12 feet x 15 feet thin area rug? I need something thicker because buckling is occurring.
We have one option for you and that is Carpet Lock. This is the only pad we sell for rugs on carpets. It is made of felt and natural rubber, is 7/16" thick and does a fantastic job of keeping rugs wrinkle free and stable.
I am looking for a pad to put on top of carpet to hold a 12' x 15' area rug in place. What do you suggest?
I recommend Carpet Lock. This felt and natural rubber pad is the only one we carry for rugs on carpets and it benefits from a strong grip that keeps rugs flat, stable and wrinkle free.
We have purchased a 12ft x 15ft carpet to use as a den rug. However, it has a rough backing, and we need to protect our hardwood floor. Which pad can give us this protection? The carpet is plush and so padding is not a priority.
I think the Eco Plush pad would be a very good choice for you. It is an all felt pad that will prevent your rug from scratching the hardwood. This pad is available in three different thicknesses: 1.4", 3/8" and 1/2".
What is the best pad for a thin Bessarabian antique rug on a tile floor?
I would recommend Contour Lock or Superior Lock. These are felt and natural rubber pads that provide grip and cushioning. Contour Lock is 1/8" thick while Superior Lock is available in three different thicknesses: They are 1/4", 1/3" and 7/16".
