Rug Pads for Laminate Floors

Choosing the Best Rug Pad for Laminate Floors

Laminate flooring has a similar look to beautiful hardwood flooring but offers more durability at a fraction of the price.

It is important to use a quality rug pad that is made with materials that are compatible with your laminate floors. If possible, contact your flooring manufacturer to see what rug pad material is safe to use with your particular laminate model. This is because some laminate manufacturers say to use only natural rubber rug pads while others say no rubber at all, depending on how the floor is made.

When choosing a rug pad for laminate floors, the easiest way is to consider the size of your rug:

Rug Pads for a Smaller Rug (Smaller than 6ft x 9ft)

With a small rug or throw rug on any hard floor, you'll typically need a non slip rug pad to prevent slipping, sliding and bunching. While you can use other ways to stop your rug from sliding on laminate floors like rug gripper, rug tape, or carpet tape, these options can sometimes damage the floor. For this reason, we recommend a non slip pad. (For more about non slip solutions for laminate flooring, see our blog post on how to keep rugs from slipping on laminate floors.)

If a rubber rug pad is recommended for your laminate, Super Lock Natural, Nature's Grip, and RugPro are all high performance, low-profile rug pads with strong grip, ideal for rugs in high traffic areas or those underneath doorways. These pads incorporate natural rubber for high gripping capacity.

The Nature's Grip rug pad is fully eco-friendly by merging natural fibers from rubber and jute. Our strongest gripping rug pad is the RugPro which combines the natural fiber of natural rubber with synthetic fiber for the felt.

If you want to add extra comfort, a felt and rubber pad like Contour Lock or Superior Lock will be a more cushioned rug pad while still having enough grip.

If rubber is NOT recommended for your laminate, Anchor Grip, made from a soybean-based polymer blend is the best (and only) option for non-slip protection.

Rug Pads for Larger Rugs (Larger than 6ft x 9ft)

A larger area rug is usually anchored down by its own weight or surrounding furniture and therefore does not typically need a non-slip area rug pad.

For laminate floors, this makes choosing the right rug pad much easier because we offer cushioned rug pads that don't contain any rubber. Eco Plush, made from 100% recycled felt is a luxurious cushioned pad for large rugs and is completely safe to use with all types of laminate flooring as well as other hard flooring types.

Rug Pads for Vinyl Flooring

Vinyl and vinyl plank floors can be tricky to protect because many vinyl flooring manufacturers recommend using a non-rubber product. These are our non-rubber alternatives (including our luxurious memory foam rug pad).

Rug Pads for Concrete Floors

For concrete and basement floors, you'll likely want a more cushioned rug pad to protect from the uneven and cold floor surface. Check our recommended rug pads for concrete floors.

Rug Pads for Carpet

Layering a rug on carpet can be a great way to change up a room, but carpet can also cause bunching and wrinkling for your rug. Our Carpet Lock rug pad is the perfect answer.

Customer Questions & Answers

  • Do I need a non-slip pad or a cushion pad?

Non-slip pads are best for high-traffic areas such as foyers and hallways, where thin rugs and runners are prone to slipping and sliding. Our cushion pads add a plush layer for large rugs already anchored by furniture, such as living and dining rooms. Should you decide you need a degree of both grip and cushioning, opt for a felt and rubber pad.

  • How should I measure my rug for a rug pad?

We recommend to start with the width followed by the length of the rug. You do not need to include any fringes or tassels as this can throw off the measurement of the pad. We always recommend to round to nearest half inch for all measurements to get the best fitting pad for your rug.

  • Do you custom cut your rug pads?

Yes, we professionally custom cut our rug pads to fit any rug dimension. All of our rug pads are cut directly from the roll by a trained staff member. Before adding a product to your cart, all you need to do is enter your rug's size and shape. We will take between 1-1.5’’ off all sides, depending on how thick the pad is. All of this will be detailed for you after you fill out the product form. If you have a more complex request, you’re free to offer alternative cutting instructions ("special instructions") as well.

  • Which rug pads are best for shag rugs?

We would recommend a felt and rubber pad like RugPro, Contour Lock or Superior Lock. If you want a low profile option, RugPro is the best fit. If you would like to add a some cushioning, Contour Lock or Superior Lock is recommended.

  • How thick should my rug pad be for laminate floors?

The thickness of your rug pad should depend on function and personal preference. For small rugs and hallway runners, a low profile pad with minimal cushioning is the best option, as a thicker pad may cause people to trip. Our non-slip pads include Nature’s Grip, Super Lock Natural, and Anchor Grip. Moderately sized rugs (3’x5’ to 6’x9’) usually require a non-slip rug pad. You should choose a non-slip rug pad if cushion is not a priority, and a felt + rubber pad for cushion and grip. For larger rugs (7’x10’+) that are often anchored down with furniture, a cushion pad such as Eco Fiber or Cloud Comfort offers varying levels of comfort for rugs that do not need a non-slip rug pad.
